Niko Besnier est professeur d’anthropologie culturelle à l’Université d’Amsterdam, il est actuellement Editor-in-Chief de la revue American Ethnologist et a été membre du editorial board de Social Anthropology/ Anthropologie sociale
Présentation :
For many scholars who are getting started in their academic careers, how to get an article published is fraught with mystery and anxiety-provoking. This workshop aims to dispel some of the mystery and alleviate some of the anxiety. Focusing in particular on our journal American Ethnologist, we will analyze argument structure, the relationship between theory and ethnography, issues of voice, and the practical aspects of writing and submitting an article manuscript that will sail through the review process.

A l’occasion du séjour de recherche au CMH de Claudia Giacoman, professeure de sociologie à l’Institut de sociologie de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, nous organisons une journée de travail autour de la vaste enquête en cours d’exploitation coordonnée par Claudia sur la commensalité : « “¿Cómo comemos juntos ? : Un estudio descriptivo sobre las prácticas de comensalidad en adultos de la Región Metropolitana” (Fondecyt ). Seront présentés les premières analyses et des perspectives de comparaison avec la France.

Expanding modernity. The canal network and the transfer of European shipbuilding technologies to the regions of Russia in the 18th century
The paper will discuss the governmental projects of modernization and westernization of transportation and fishing shipbuilding in the regions of Russia (the North, the Volga basin, the North-West with the Ladoga lake) through the perspective of geography of modernity in the Russian Empire. I will present the organizational structures of transfers with the Particular shipyard as a core as well as instruments of knowledge circulation. Special emphasis will be made on the problem of experts. The transformation of shipbuilders from the mere carpenters to the elite technical staff was the general tendency of the European development of shipbuilding industry and the Russian page of this story is still significantly understudied. To what extent the modernization of shipbuilding practices was connected in the eyes of the government to the social transformation from the peasant with axe to the expert with linear plan ? How the knowledge was recorded and transported ? What was the role of technical graphic and models ? In the conclusion I will discuss the question of success in connection to these projects.
